sukekiyo's alluring "MOAN" music video, a dark dream in neon lights

Mar 02, 2024

sukekiyo’s “MOAN” music video premiered on YouTube on August 1, 2023. As always, the band’s unpredictable style takes us on a journey into a dark dream, leaving room for interpretation.

In MOAN, neon lights illuminate a dark cityscape while twinkling keys complement a New Wave beat. sukekiyo’s songs often deal with taboo romance in some capacity, and MOAN keeps that theme alive. Vocalist Kyo’s lyrics hint at the perspective of a lover, prostitute, or a gray area in between. The words remain vague and suggestive, inviting listeners to interpret them. However, interpreting Kyo’s lyrics can be a daunting task, even for native Japanese speakers.

The song begins simply—”I’m wearing a shirt with sleeves that are a little long, waiting. I fixed my makeup,” he sings. “I’m a woman who wants to believe that you’ll come by at two in the morning”. Thus the song sets us off on a mysterious, double-entendre journey, where individual identities, narratives, and genders are blurred.

Embrace the dream-like nuance of MOAN‘s musical soundscape. The catchy earworm blends some of the best elements from sukekiyo’s 2021 release CANDIS with fresh experimental sounds.

sukekiyo’s luxurious costumes in this video were provided by “THE d’OR”, a designer and stylist who has also collaborated with the band DIR EN GREY. THE d’OR has worked on-stage and off, designing concert wardrobes for guitarist Kaoru and bassist Toshiya, as well as crafting Kyo’s pearl-drenched dress in the Ochita koto no aru sora music video.

On Twitter, Kyo teased that a second music video titled Houmonsha X (訪問者X) will premiere on YouTube next week. Both music videos will be included in the audio-video compilation EROSIO, which releases this month.

Last but not least, the band embarks on tour “Dakara so no uchi” this month, before continuing on to Hong Kong for two nights only.
